The usual shower of singleton fixes and minor series all over MM,
documented (hopefully adequately) in the respective changelogs. mm: change inlined allocation helpers to account at the call site
Main goal of memory allocation profiling patchset is to provide accounting that is cheap enough to run in production. To achieve that we inject counters using codetags at the allocation call sites to account every time allocation is made. This injection allows us to perform accounting efficiently because injected counters are immediately available as opposed to the alternative methods, such as using _RET_IP_, which would require counter lookup and appropriate locking that makes accounting much more expensive. This method requires all allocation functions to inject separate counters at their call sites so that their callers can be individually accounted. Counter injection is implemented by allocation hooks which should wrap all allocation functions. Inlined functions which perform allocations but do not use allocation hooks are directly charged for the allocations they perform. In most cases these functions are just specialized allocation wrappers used from multiple places to allocate objects of a specific type. It would be more useful to do the accounting at their call sites instead. Instrument these helpers to do accounting at the call site. Simple inlined allocation wrappers are converted directly into macros. More complex allocators or allocators with documentation are converted into _noprof versions and allocation hooks are added. This allows memory allocation profiling mechanism to charge allocations to the callers of these functions. mm/slab: introduce SLAB_NO_OBJ_EXT to avoid obj_ext creation
Slab extension objects can't be allocated before slab infrastructure is initialized. Some caches, like kmem_cache and kmem_cache_node, are created before slab infrastructure is initialized. Objects from these caches can't have extension objects. Introduce SLAB_NO_OBJ_EXT slab flag to mark these caches and avoid creating extensions for objects allocated from these slabs. mm, slab: remove last vestiges of SLAB_MEM_SPREAD
Yes, yes, I know the slab people were planning on going slow and letting every subsystem fight this thing on their own. But let's just rip off the band-aid and get it over and done with. I don't want to see a number of unnecessary pull requests just to get rid of a flag that no longer has any meaning. This was mainly done with a couple of 'sed' scripts and then some manual cleanup of the end result. mm, slab: use an enum to define SLAB_ cache creation flags
The values of SLAB_ cache creation flags are defined by hand, which is tedious and error-prone. Use an enum to assign the bit number and a __SLAB_FLAG_BIT() macro to #define the final flags. This renumbers the flag values, which is OK as they are only used internally. Also define a __SLAB_FLAG_UNUSED macro to assign value to flags disabled by their respective config options in a unified and sparse-friendly way. mm, slab: deprecate SLAB_MEM_SPREAD flag
The SLAB_MEM_SPREAD flag used to be implemented in SLAB, which was removed. SLUB instead relies on the page allocator's NUMA policies. Change the flag's value to 0 to free up the value it had, and mark it for full removal once all users are gone. mm: Remove kmem_valid_obj()
Function kmem_dump_obj() will splat if passed a pointer to a non-slab object. So nothing calls it directly, instead calling kmem_valid_obj() first to determine whether the passed pointer to a valid slab object. This means that merging kmem_valid_obj() into kmem_dump_obj() will make the code more concise. Therefore, convert kmem_dump_obj() to work the same way as vmalloc_dump_obj(), removing the need for the kmem_dump_obj() caller to check kmem_valid_obj(). After this, there are no remaining calls to kmem_valid_obj() anymore, and it can be safely removed. Randomized slab caches for kmalloc()
When exploiting memory vulnerabilities, "heap spraying" is a common technique targeting those related to dynamic memory allocation (i.e. the "heap"), and it plays an important role in a successful exploitation. Basically, it is to overwrite the memory area of vulnerable object by triggering allocation in other subsystems or modules and therefore getting a reference to the targeted memory location. It's usable on various types of vulnerablity including use after free (UAF), heap out- of-bound write and etc. There are (at least) two reasons why the heap can be sprayed: 1) generic slab caches are shared among different subsystems and modules, and 2) dedicated slab caches could be merged with the generic ones. Currently these two factors cannot be prevented at a low cost: the first one is a widely used memory allocation mechanism, and shutting down slab merging completely via `slub_nomerge` would be overkill. To efficiently prevent heap spraying, we propose the following approach: to create multiple copies of generic slab caches that will never be merged, and random one of them will be used at allocation. The random selection is based on the address of code that calls `kmalloc()`, which means it is static at runtime (rather than dynamically determined at each time of allocation, which could be bypassed by repeatedly spraying in brute force). In other words, the randomness of cache selection will be with respect to the code address rather than time, i.e. allocations in different code paths would most likely pick different caches, although kmalloc() at each place would use the same cache copy whenever it is executed. In this way, the vulnerable object and memory allocated in other subsystems and modules will (most probably) be on different slab caches, which prevents the object from being sprayed. Meanwhile, the static random selection is further enhanced with a per-boot random seed, which prevents the attacker from finding a usable kmalloc that happens to pick the same cache with the vulnerable subsystem/module by analyzing the open source code. In other words, with the per-boot seed, the random selection is static during each time the system starts and runs, but not across different system startups. The overhead of performance has been tested on a 40-core x86 server by comparing the results of `perf bench all` between the kernels with and without this patch based on the latest linux-next kernel, which shows minor difference. Patch series "mm, dma, arm64: Reduce ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN to 8", v7. A series reducing the kmalloc() minimum alignment on arm64 to 8 (from 128). This patch (of 17): In preparation for supporting a kmalloc() minimum alignment smaller than the arch DMA alignment, decouple the two definitions. This requires that either the kmalloc() caches are aligned to a (run-time) cache-line size or the DMA API bounces unaligned kmalloc() allocations. Subsequent patches will implement both options. After this patch, ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN is expected to be used in static alignment annotations and defined by an architecture to be the maximum alignment for all supported configurations/SoCs in a single Image. Architectures opting in to a smaller ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN will need to define its value in the arch headers. Since ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN is now always defined, adjust the #ifdef in dma_get_cache_alignment() so that there is no change for architectures not requiring a minimum DMA alignment. mm/slab: introduce kmem_cache flag SLAB_NO_MERGE
Allow API users of kmem_cache_create to specify that they don't want any slab merge or aliasing (with similar sized objects). Use this in kfence_test. The SKB (sk_buff) kmem_cache slab is critical for network performance. Network stack uses kmem_cache_{alloc,free}_bulk APIs to gain performance by amortising the alloc/free cost. For the bulk API to perform efficiently the slub fragmentation need to be low. Especially for the SLUB allocator, the efficiency of bulk free API depend on objects belonging to the same slab (page). When running different network performance microbenchmarks, I started to notice that performance was reduced (slightly) when machines had longer uptimes. I believe the cause was 'skbuff_head_cache' got aliased/merged into the general slub for 256 bytes sized objects (with my kernel config, without CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY). For SKB kmem_cache network stack have reasons for not merging, but it varies depending on kernel config (e.g. CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY). We want to explicitly set SLAB_NO_MERGE for this kmem_cache. Merge branch 'slab/for-6.4/slob-removal' into slab/for-next
A series by myself to remove CONFIG_SLOB: The SLOB allocator was deprecated in 6.2 and there have been no complaints so far so let's proceed with the removal. Besides the code cleanup, the main immediate benefit will be allowing kfree() family of function to work on kmem_cache_alloc() objects, which was incompatible with SLOB. This includes kfree_rcu() which had no kmem_cache_free_rcu() counterpart yet and now it shouldn't be necessary anymore. Otherwise it's all straightforward removal. After this series, 'git grep slob' or 'git grep SLOB' will have 3 remaining relevant hits in non-mm code: - tomoyo - patch submitted and carried there, doesn't need to wait for this series - skbuff - patch to cleanup now-unnecessary #ifdefs will be posted to netdev after this is merged, as requested to avoid conflicts - ftrace ring_buffer - patch to remove obsolete comment is carried there The rest of 'git grep SLOB' hits are false positives, or intentional (CREDITS, and mm/Kconfig SLUB_TINY description to help those that will happen to migrate later). |

This is the second in a series from an ongoing review of the RCU documentation. fixes.2022.10.21a: Miscellaneous fixes. lazy.2022.11.30a: Introduces a default-off Kconfig option that depends on RCU_NOCB_CPU that, on CPUs mentioned in the nohz_full or rcu_nocbs boot-argument CPU lists, causes call_rcu() to introduce delays. These delays result in significant power savings on nearly idle Android and ChromeOS systems. These savings range from a few percent to more than ten percent. This series also includes several commits that change call_rcu() to a new call_rcu_hurry() function that avoids these delays in a few cases, for example, where timely wakeups are required. Several of these are outside of RCU and thus have acks and reviews from the relevant maintainers. srcunmisafe.2022.11.09a: Creates an srcu_read_lock_nmisafe() and an srcu_read_unlock_nmisafe() for architectures that support NMIs, but which do not provide NMI-safe this_cpu_inc(). These NMI-safe SRCU functions are required by the upcoming lockless printk() work by John Ogness et al. SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT caches allocate their slab pages with __GFP_RECLAIMABLE and can help against fragmentation by grouping pages by mobility, but on tiny systems mobility grouping is likely disabled anyway and ignoring SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT might instead lead to merging of caches that are made incompatible just by the flag. Thus with CONFIG_SLUB_TINY, make SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT ineffective. Distinguishing kmalloc(__GFP_RECLAIMABLE) can help against fragmentation by grouping pages by mobility, but on tiny systems the extra memory overhead of separate set of kmalloc-rcl caches will probably be worse, and mobility grouping likely disabled anyway. Thus with CONFIG_SLUB_TINY, don't create kmalloc-rcl caches and use the regular ones. slab: Remove special-casing of const 0 size allocations
Passing a constant-0 size allocation into kmalloc() or kmalloc_node() does not need to be a fast-path operation, so the static return value can be removed entirely. This makes sure that all paths through the inlines result in a full extern function call, where __alloc_size() hints will actually be seen[1] by GCC. (A constant return value of 0 means the "0" allocation size won't be propagated by the inline.) kasan: only define kasan_cache_create for Generic mode
Right now, kasan_cache_create() assigns SLAB_KASAN for all KASAN modes and then sets up metadata-related cache parameters for the Generic mode. SLAB_KASAN is used in two places: 1. In slab_ksize() to account for per-object metadata when calculating the size of the accessible memory within the object. 2. In slab_common.c via kasan_never_merge() to prevent merging of caches with per-object metadata. Both cases are only relevant when per-object metadata is present, which is only the case with the Generic mode. Thus, assign SLAB_KASAN and define kasan_cache_create() only for the Generic mode. slab: Introduce kmalloc_size_roundup()
In the effort to help the compiler reason about buffer sizes, the __alloc_size attribute was added to allocators. This improves the scope of the compiler's ability to apply CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS and (in the near future) CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE. For most allocations, this works well, as the vast majority of callers are not expecting to use more memory than what they asked for. There is, however, one common exception to this: anticipatory resizing of kmalloc allocations. These cases all use ksize() to determine the actual bucket size of a given allocation (e.g. 128 when 126 was asked for). This comes in two styles in the kernel: 1) An allocation has been determined to be too small, and needs to be resized. Instead of the caller choosing its own next best size, it wants to minimize the number of calls to krealloc(), so it just uses ksize() plus some additional bytes, forcing the realloc into the next bucket size, from which it can learn how large it is now. For example: data = krealloc(data, ksize(data) + 1, gfp); data_len = ksize(data); 2) The minimum size of an allocation is calculated, but since it may grow in the future, just use all the space available in the chosen bucket immediately, to avoid needing to reallocate later. A good example of this is skbuff's allocators: data = kmalloc_reserve(size, gfp_mask, node, &pfmemalloc); ... /* kmalloc(size) might give us more room than requested. * Put skb_shared_info exactly at the end of allocated zone, * to allow max possible filling before reallocation. */ osize = ksize(data); size = SKB_WITH_OVERHEAD(osize); In both cases, the "how much was actually allocated?" question is answered _after_ the allocation, where the compiler hinting is not in an easy place to make the association any more. This mismatch between the compiler's view of the buffer length and the code's intention about how much it is going to actually use has already caused problems[1]. It is possible to fix this by reordering the use of the "actual size" information. We can serve the needs of users of ksize() and still have accurate buffer length hinting for the compiler by doing the bucket size calculation _before_ the allocation. Code can instead ask "how large an allocation would I get for a given size?". Introduce kmalloc_size_roundup(), to serve this function so we can start replacing the "anticipatory resizing" uses of ksize(). slab: Remove __malloc attribute from realloc functions
The __malloc attribute should not be applied to "realloc" functions, as the returned pointer may alias the storage of the prior pointer. Instead of splitting __malloc from __alloc_size, which would be a huge amount of churn, just create __realloc_size for the few cases where it is needed. Thanks to Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> for reporting build failures with gcc-8 in earlier version which tried to remove the #ifdef. While the "alloc_size" attribute is available on all GCC versions, I forgot that it gets disabled explicitly by the kernel in GCC < 9.1 due to misbehaviors. Add a note to the compiler_attributes.h entry for it.
