When everything is starting up we are likely to have a lot of child
processes producing output at once. This means that we can reduce
overhead a bit by allowing epoll_wait() to return more than one
descriptor at once, it cuts down on the number of system calls we need
to do which on virtual platforms where the syscall overhead is a bit
more noticable and we're likely to have a lot more children active can
make a small but noticable difference.
On physical platforms the relatively small number of processes being run
and vastly improved speeds push the effects of this change into the
noise.

At present fp-stress has a bit of a thundering herd problem since the
children it spawns start running immediately, meaning that they can start
starving the parent process of CPU before it has even started all the
children. This is much more severe on virtual platforms since they tend to
support far more SVE and SME vector lengths, be slower in general and for
some have issues with performance when simulating multiple CPUs.
We can mitigate this problem by having all the child processes block before
starting the test program, meaning that we at least have all the child
processes started before we start heavily using CPU. We still have the same
load issues while waiting for the actual stress test programs to start up
and produce output but they're at least all ready to go before that kicks
in, resulting in substantial reductions in overall runtime on some of the
severely affected systems. One test was showing about 20% improvement.

Currently we don't have an explicit check that when it's been a second
since we have seen output produced from the test programs starting up that
means all of them are running and we should start both sending signals and
timing out. This is not reliable, especially on very heavily loaded systems
where the test programs might take longer than a second to run.
We do skip sending signals to children that have not produced output yet
so we won't cause them to exit unexpectedly by sending a signal but this
can create confusion when interpreting output, for example appearing to
show the tests running for less time than expected or appearing to show
missed signal deliveries. Avoid issues by explicitly checking that we have
seen output from all the child processes before we start sending signals
or counting test run time.
This is especially likely on virtual platforms with large numbers of vector
lengths supported since the platforms are slow and there will be a lot of
tasks per CPU.

Currently we treat any error when reading from the child as a failure and
don't read any more output from that child as a result. This ignores the
fact that it is valid for read() to return EINTR as the error code if there
is a signal pending so we could stop handling the output of children,
especially during exit when we will get some SIGCHLD signals delivered to
us. Fix this by pulling the read handling out into a separate function
which returns a flag if reads should be continued and wrapping it in a
loop.

When fp-stress gets a termination signal it sets a flag telling itself to
exit and sends a termination signal to all the children. If the flag is set
then don't bother repeating this process, it isn't going to accomplish
anything other than consume CPU time which can be an issue when running in
emulation.

Currently we set -march=armv8.5+memtag when building the MTE selftests,
allowing the compiler to emit v8.5 and MTE instructions for anything it
generates. This means that we may get code that will generate SIGILLs when
run on older systems rather than skipping on non-MTE systems as should be
the case. Most toolchains don't select any incompatible instructions but
I have seen some reports which suggest that some may be appearing which do
so. This is also potentially problematic in that if the compiler chooses to
emit any MTE instructions for the C code it may interfere with the MTE
usage we are trying to test.
Since the only reason we are specifying this option is to allow us to
assemble MTE instructions in mte_helper.S we can avoid these issues by
moving to using a .arch directive there and adding the -march explicitly to
the toolchain support check instead of the generic CFLAGS.

We use a local variable hwcap to refer to the element of the hwcaps array
which we are currently checking. When checking for the relevant hwcap bit
being set in testing we were dereferencing hwcaps rather than hwcap in
fetching the AT_HWCAP to use, which is perfectly valid C but means we were
always checking the bit was set in the hwcap for whichever feature is first
in the array. Remove the stray s.

Extend the ptrace test support for NT_ARM_TLS to cover TPIDR2_EL0 - on
systems that support SME the NT_ARM_TLS regset can be up to 2 elements
long with the second element containing TPIDR2_EL0. On systems
supporting SME we verify that this value can be read and written while
on systems that do not support SME we verify correct truncation of reads
and writes.

Currently syscall-abi permits the bits in Z registers not shared with the
V registers as well as all of the predicate registers to be preserved on
syscall but the actual implementation has always cleared them and our
documentation has now been updated to make that the documented ABI so
update the syscall-abi test to match.

The buffer used for verifying SVE Z registers allocated enough space for
16 maximally sized registers rather than 32 due to using the macro for the
number of P registers. In practice this didn't matter since for historical
reasons the maximum VQ defined in the ABI is greater the architectural
maximum so we will always allocate more space than is needed even with
emulated platforms implementing the architectural maximum. Still, we should
use the right define.

Now that the core utilities for signal testing support handling data in
EXTRA_CONTEXT blocks we can test larger SVE and SME VLs which spill over
the limits in the base signal context. This is done by defining storage
for the context as a union with a ucontext_t and a buffer together with
some helpers for getting relevant sizes and offsets like we do for
fake_sigframe, this isn't the most lovely code ever but is fairly
straightforward to implement and much less invasive to the somewhat
unclear and indistinct layers of abstraction in the signal handling test
code.

When preserving the signal context for later verification by testcases
check for and include any EXTRA_CONTEXT block if enough space has been
provided.
Since the EXTRA_CONTEXT block includes a pointer to the start of the
additional data block we need to do at least some fixup on the copied
data. For simplicity in users we do this by extending the length of
the EXTRA_CONTEXT to include the following termination record, this
will cause users to see the extra data as part of the linked list of
contexts without needing any special handling. Care will be needed if
any specific tests for EXTRA_CONTEXT are added beyond the validation
done in ASSERT_GOOD_CONTEXT.

Currently in validate_reserved() we check the basic form and contents of
an EXTRA_CONTEXT block but do not actually validate anything inside the
data block it provides. Extend the validation to do so, when we get to the
terminator for the main data block reset and start walking the extra data
block instead.

Currently for the more complex signal context types we validate the context
specific details the end of the parsing loop validate_reserved() if we've
ever seen a context of that type. This is currently merely a bit inefficient
but will get a bit awkward when we start parsing extra_context, at which
point we will need to reset the head to advance into the extra space that
extra_context provides. Instead only do the more detailed checks on each
context type the first time we see that context type.

Currently in validate_extra_context() we assert both that the extra data
pointed to by the EXTRA_CONTEXT is 16 byte aligned and that it immediately
follows the struct _aarch64_ctx providing the terminator for the linked
list of contexts in the signal frame. Since struct _aarch64_ctx is an 8
byte structure which must be 16 byte aligned these cannot both be true. As
documented in sigcontext.h and implemented by the kernel the extra data
should be at the next 16 byte aligned address after the terminator so fix
the validation to match.

When arm64 signal context data overflows the base struct sigcontext it gets
placed in an extra buffer pointed to by a record of type EXTRA_CONTEXT in
the base struct sigcontext which is required to be the last record in the
base struct sigframe. The current validation code attempts to check this
by using GET_RESV_NEXT_HEAD() to step forward from the current record to
the next but that is a macro which assumes it is being provided with a
struct _aarch64_ctx and uses the size there to skip forward to the next
record. Instead validate_extra_context() passes it a struct extra_context
which has a separate size field. This compiles but results in us trying
to validate a termination record in completely the wrong place, at best
failing validation and at worst just segfaulting. Fix this by passing
the struct _aarch64_ctx we meant to into the macro.

In handle_input_signal_copyctx() we use ASSERT_GOOD_CONTEXT() to validate
that the context we are saving meets expectations however we do this on
the saved copy rather than on the actual signal context passed in. This
breaks validation of EXTRA_CONTEXT since we attempt to validate the ABI
requirement that the additional space supplied is immediately after the
termination record in the standard context which will not be the case
after it has been copied to another location.
Fix this by doing the validation before we copy. Note that nothing actually
looks inside the EXTRA_CONTEXT at present.

Currently we accept any size for the ZA signal context that the shared
code will accept which means we don't verify that any data is present.
Since we have enabled ZA we know that there must be data so strengthen
the check to only accept a signal frame with data, and while we're at it
since we enabled ZA but did not set any data we know that ZA must contain
zeros, confirm that.

Currently the stress test programs for floating point context switching are
run by hand, there are extremely simplistic harnesses which run some copies
of each test individually but they are not integrated into kselftest and
with SVE and SME they only run with whatever vector length the process has
by default. This is hassle when running the tests and means that they're
not being run at all by CI systems picking up kselftest.
In order to improve our coverage and provide a more convenient interface
provide a harness program which starts enough stress test programs up to
cause context switching and runs them for a set period. If only FPSIMD is
available in the system we start two copies of the FPSIMD stress test per
CPU, otherwise we start one copy of the FPSIMD and then start the SVE,
streaming SVE and ZA tests once per CPU for each available VL they have
to run on. We then run for a set period monitoring for any errors
reported by the test programs before cleanly terminating them.
In order to provide additional coverage of signal handling and some extra
noise in the scheduling we send a SIGUSR2 to the stress tests once a
second, the tests will count the number of signals they get.
Since kselftest is generally expected to run quickly we by default only run
for ten seconds. This is enough to show if there is anything cripplingly
wrong but not exactly a thorough soak test, for interactive and more
focused use a command line option -t N is provided which overrides the
length of time to run for (specified in seconds) and if 0 is specified then
there is no timeout and the test must be manually terminated. The timeout
is counted in seconds with no output, this is done to account for the
potentially slow startup time for the test programs on virtual platforms
which tend to struggle during startup as they are both slow and tend to
support a wide range of vector lengths.

Currently the floating point stress tests mostly support testing that the
data they are checking can be disrupted from a signal handler triggered by
SIGUSR1. This is not properly implemented for all the tests and in testing
is frequently modified to just handle the signal without corrupting data in
order to ensure that signal handling does not corrupt data. Directly support
this usage by installing a SIGUSR2 handler which simply counts the signal
delivery.

Add some trivial hwcap validation which checks that /proc/cpuinfo and
AT_HWCAP agree with each other and can verify that for extensions that can
generate a SIGILL due to adding new instructions one appears or doesn't
appear as expected. I've added SVE and SME, other capabilities can be
added later if this gets merged.
This isn't super exciting but on the other hand took very little time to
write and should be handy when verifying that you wired up AT_HWCAP
properly.

In case a distribution enables branch protection by default do as we do for
the main kernel and explicitly disable branch protection when building the
test case for having BTI disabled to ensure it doesn't get turned on by the
toolchain defaults.

The "bti" selftests are built with -nostdlib, which apparently
automatically creates a statically linked binary, which is what we want
and need for BTI (to avoid interactions with the dynamic linker).
However this is not true when building a PIE binary, which some
toolchains (Ubuntu) configure as the default.
When compiling btitest with such a toolchain, it will create a
dynamically linked binary, which will probably fail some tests, as the
dynamic linker might not support BTI:

To make sure we create static binaries, add an explicit -static on the
linker command line. This forces static linking even if the toolchain
defaults to PIE builds, and fixes btitest runs on BTI enabled machines.

Void pointers may be freely used with other pointer types in C, any casts
between void * and other pointer types serve no purpose other than to
mask potential warnings. Drop such casts from check_tags_inclusion to
help with future review of the code.

The MTE check_tags_inclusion test uses the mte_switch_mode() helper but
ignores the return values it generates meaning we might not be testing
the things we're trying to test, fail the test if it reports an error.
The helper will log any errors it returns.

mte_switch_mode() currently rejects attempts to set a zero tag however
there are tests such as check_tags_inclusion which attempt to cover cases
with zero tags using mte_switch_mode(). Since it is not clear why we are
rejecting zero tags change the test to accept them.
The issue has not previously been as apparent as it should be since the
return value of mte_switch_mode() was not always checked in the callers
and the tests weren't otherwise failing.

Currently the arm64 kselftests attempt to locate the ABI headers using
custom logic which doesn't work correctly in the case of out of tree builds
if KBUILD_OUTPUT is not specified. Since lib.mk defines KHDR_INCLUDES with
the appropriate flags we can simply remove the custom logic and use that
instead.

Currently the arm64 floating point tests don't support out of tree builds
due to two quirks of the kselftest build system. One is that when building
a program from multiple files we shouldn't separately compile the main
program to an object file as that will result in the pattern rule not
matching when adjusted for the output directory. The other is that we also
need to include $(OUTPUT) in the names of the binaries when specifying the
dependencies in order to ensure that they get picked up with O=.
Rewrite the dependencies for the executables to fix these issues. The
kselftest build system will ensure OUTPUT is always defined.

The kselftest lib.mk provides a default all target which builds additional
programs from TEST_GEN_PROGS_EXTENDED, use that rather than using
TEST_PROGS_EXTENDED which is for programs that don't need to be built like
shell scripts. Leave fpsimd-stress and sve-stress there since they are
scripts.

Add a small testcase that attempts to do a clone() with ZA enabled and
verifies that it remains enabled with the same contents. We only check
one word in one horizontal vector of ZA since there's already other tests
that check for data corruption more broadly, we're just looking to make
sure that ZA is still enabled and it looks like the data got copied.

For every possible combination of SVE and SME vector length verify that for
each possible value of SVCR after a syscall we leave streaming mode and ZA
is preserved. We don't need to take account of any streaming/non streaming
SVE vector length changes in the assembler code since the store instructions
will handle the vector length for us. We log if the system supports FA64 and
only try to set FFR in streaming mode if it does.

Add some basic coverage for the ZA ptrace interface, including walking
through all the vector lengths supported in the system. Unlike SVE
doing syscalls does not discard the ZA state so when we set data in ZA
we run the child process briefly, having it add one to each byte in ZA
in order to validate that both the vector size and data are being read
and written as expected when the process runs.

In order to allow ptrace of streaming mode SVE registers we have added a
new regset for streaming mode which in isolation offers the same ABI as
regular SVE with a different vector type. Add this to the array of regsets
we handle, together with additional tests for the interoperation of the
two regsets.

Add test cases for the SME signal handing ABI patterned off the SVE tests.
Due to the small size of the tests and the differences in ABI (especially
around needing to account for both streaming SVE and ZA) there is some code
duplication here.
We currently cover:
- Reporting of the vector length.
- Lack of support for changing vector length.
- Presence and size of register state for streaming SVE and ZA.
As with the SVE tests we do not yet have any validation of register
contents.

Add a stress test for context switching of the ZA register state based on
the similar tests Dave Martin wrote for FPSIMD and SVE registers. The test
loops indefinitely writing a data pattern to ZA then reading it back and
verifying that it's what was expected.
Unlike the other tests we manually assemble the SME instructions since at
present no released toolchain has SME support integrated.

As part of the generic code for signal handling test cases we parse all
signal frames to make sure they have at least the basic form we expect
and that there are no unexpected frames present in the signal context.

One of the features of SME is the addition of streaming mode, in which we
have access to a set of streaming mode SVE registers at the SME vector
length. Since these are accessed using the SVE instructions let's reuse
the existing SVE stress test for testing with a compile time option for
controlling the few small differences needed:
- Enter streaming mode immediately on starting the program.
- In streaming mode FFR is removed so skip reading and writing FFR.

The Scalable Matrix Extension adds a new system register TPIDR2 intended to
be used by libc for its own thread specific use, add some kselftests which
exercise the ABI for it.
Since this test should with some adjustment work for TPIDR and any other
similar registers added in future add tests for it in a separate
directory rather than placing it with the other floating point tests,
nothing existing looked suitable so I created a new test directory
called "abi".
Since this feature is intended to be used by libc the test is built as
freestanding code using nolibc so we don't end up with the test program
and libc both trying to manage the register simultaneously and
distrupting each other. As a result of being written using nolibc rather
than using hwcaps to identify if SME is available in the system we check
for the default SME vector length configuration in proc, adding hwcap
support to nolibc seems like disproportionate effort and didn't feel
entirely idiomatic for what nolibc is trying to do.

The current tests use the prctls for various things but there's no
coverage of the edges of the interface so add some basics. This isn't
hugely useful as it is (it originally had some coverage for the
combinations with asymmetric mode but we removed the prctl() for that)
but it might be a helpful starting point for future work, for example
covering error handling.

checking both the mode and the tag. Since we'll need to dynamically check

The MTE selftests have a helper evaluate_test() which translates a return
code into a call to ksft_test_result_*(). Currently this only handles pass
and fail, silently ignoring any other code. Update the helper to support
skipped tests and log any unknown return codes as an error so we get at
least some diagnostic if anything goes wrong.

Currently we validate that we can set the floating point state via the SVE
regset and read the data via the FPSIMD regset but we do not valiate that
the opposite case works as expected. Add a test that covers this case,
noting that when reading via SVE regset the kernel has the option of
returning either SVE or FPSIMD data so we need to accept both formats.

Currently the sve-ptrace test for setting and reading FPSIMD data assumes
that the child will start off in FPSIMD only mode and that it can use this
to read some FPSIMD mode SVE ptrace data, skipping the test if it can't.
This isn't an assumption guaranteed by the ABI and also limits how we can
use this testcase within the program. Instead skip the initial read and
just generate a FPSIMD format buffer for the write part of the test, making
the coverage more robust in the face of future kernel and test program
changes.

If the test triggers a problem it may well result in a log message from
the kernel such as a WARN() or BUG(). If these include a PID it can help
with debugging to know if it was the parent or child process that triggered
the issue, since the test is just creating a new thread the process name
will be the same either way. Print the PIDs of the parent and child on
startup so users have this information to hand should it be needed.

Some features may invalidate some tests, for example by supporting an
operation which would trap otherwise. Allow tests to list features that
they are incompatible with so we can cover the case where a signal will
be generated without disruption on systems where that won't happen.

Instead of hard coding a small amount of tests, generate a wider
range of tests to try catch any corner cases that could show up.
These new tests test different MTE tag lengths and offsets, which
previously would have caused infinite loops in the kernel. This was
fixed by 295cf15623 ("arm64: Avoid premature usercopy failure"),
so these are regressions tests for that corner case.

These can be used to place an MTE tag at an address that is not at a
page size boundary.
The kernel prior to 295cf15623 ("arm64: Avoid premature usercopy failure"),
would infinite loop if an MTE tag was placed not at a PAGE_SIZE boundary.
This is because the kernel checked if the pages were readable by checking the
first byte of each page, but would then fault in the middle of the page due
to the MTE tag.

The GCR EL1 test unconditionally includes local definitions of the prctls
it tests. Since not only will the kselftest build infrastructure ensure
that the in tree uapi headers are available but the toolchain being used to
build kselftest may ensure that system uapi headers with MTE support are
available this causes the compiler to warn about duplicate definitions.
Remove these duplicate definitions.

Currently we unconditionally test the ability to set the vector length
inheritance flag via ptrace meaning that we generate false failures on
systems that don't support SVE when we attempt to set the vector length
there. Check the hwcap and mark the tests as skipped when it's not present.

Since it's likely to be useful for performance work with SVE let's have a
pidbench that gives us some numbers for consideration. In order to ensure
that we test exactly the scenario we want this is written in assembly - if
system libraries use SVE this would stop us exercising the case where the
process has never used SVE.
We exercise three cases:
- Never having used SVE.
- Having used SVE once.
- Using SVE after each syscall.
by spinning running getpid() for a fixed number of iterations with the
time measured using CNTVCT_EL0 reported on the console. This is obviously
a totally unrealistic benchmark which will show the extremes of any
performance variation but equally given the potential gotchas with use of
FP instructions by system libraries it's good to have some concrete code
shared to make it easier to compare notes on results.
Testing over multiple SVE vector lengths will need to be done with vlset
currently, the test could be extended to iterate over all of them if
desired.

Currently we don't have any coverage of the syscall ABI so let's add a very
dumb test program which sets up register patterns, does a sysscall and then
checks that the register state after the syscall matches what we expect.
The program is written in an extremely simplistic fashion with the goal of
making it easy to verify that it's doing what it thinks it's doing, it is
not a model of how one should write actual code.
Currently we validate the general purpose, FPSIMD and SVE registers. There
are other thing things that could be covered like FPCR and flags registers,
these can be covered incrementally - my main focus at the minute is
covering the ABI for the SVE registers.
The program repeats the tests for all possible SVE vector lengths in case
some vector length specific optimisation causes issues, as well as testing
FPSIMD only. It tries two syscalls, getpid() and sched_yield(), in an
effort to cover both immediate return to userspace and scheduling another
task though there are no guarantees which cases will be hit.
A new test directory "abi" is added to hold the test, it doesn't seem to
fit well into any of the existing directories.

Currently we have the facility to specify custom code to trigger a signal
but none of the tests use it and for some reason the framework requires us
to also specify a signal to send as a trigger in order to make use of a
custom trigger. This doesn't seem to make much sense, instead allow the
use of a custom trigger function without specifying a signal to inject.

SME introduces a new mode called streaming mode in which the SVE registers
have a different vector length. Since the ptrace interface for this is
based on the existing SVE interface prepare for supporting this by moving
the regset specific configuration into struct and passing that around,
allowing these tests to be reused for streaming mode. As we will also have
to verify the interoperation of the SVE and streaming SVE regsets don't
just iterate over an array.

ARRAY_SIZE define is added in a separate patch to prepare for this
change.

The various floating point test programs written in assembly have a bunch
of helper functions and macros which are cut'n'pasted between them. Factor
them out into a separate source file which is linked into all of them.
We don't include memcmp() since it isn't as generic as it should be and
directly branches to report an error in the programs.

As part of the enumeration interface for setting vector lengths it is valid
to set vector lengths not supported in the system, these will be rounded to
a supported vector length and returned from the prctl(). Add a test which
exercises this for every valid vector length and makes sure that the return
value is as expected and that this is reflected in the actual system state.

Currently the selftest for the SVE register set is not quite as thorough
as is desirable - it only validates that the value of a single Z register
is not modified by a partial write to a lower numbered Z register after
having previously been set through the FPSIMD regset.
Make this more thorough:
- Test the ability to set vector lengths and enumerate those supported in
the system.
- Validate data in all Z and P registers, plus FPSR and FPCR.
- Test reads via the FPSIMD regset after set via the SVE regset.
There's still some oversights, the main one being that due to the need to
generate a pattern in FFR and the fact that this rewrite is primarily
motivated by SME's streaming SVE which doesn't have FFR we don't currently
test FFR. Update the TODO to reflect those that occurred to me (and fix an
adjacent typo in there).

When verifying setting a Z register via ptrace we check each byte by hand,
iterating over the buffer using a pointer called p and treating each
register value written as a test. This creates output referring to "p[X]"
which is confusing since SVE also has predicate registers Pn. Tweak the
output to avoid confusion here.

For some reason the SVE ptrace test code starts off by setting values in
some of the SVE vector registers in the parent process which it then never
interacts with when verifying the ptrace interfaces. This is not especially
relevant to what's being tested and somewhat confusing when reading the
code so let's remove it.

During initialization of a signal testcase, features declared as required
are properly checked against the running system but no action is then taken
to effectively skip such a testcase.
Fix core signals test logic to abort initialization and report such a
testcase as skipped to the KSelfTest framework.

When skipping the tests due to a lack of system support for MTE we
currently print a message saying FAIL which makes it look like the test
failed even though the test did actually report KSFT_SKIP, creating some
confusion. Change the error message to say SKIP instead so things are

We provide interfaces for configuring the SVE vector length seen by
processes using prctl and also via /proc for configuring the default
values. Provide tests that exercise all these interfaces and verify that
they take effect as expected, though at present no test fully enumerates
all the possible vector lengths.
A subset of this is already tested via sve-probe-vls but the /proc
interfaces are not currently covered at all.
In preparation for the forthcoming support for SME, the Scalable Matrix
Extension, which has separately but similarly configured vector lengths
which we expect to offer similar userspace interfaces for, all the actual
files and prctls used are parameterised and we don't validate that the
architectural minimum vector length is the minimum we see.

SVE provides an instruction RDVL which reports the currently configured
vector length. In order to validate that our vector length configuration
interfaces are working correctly without having to build the C code for
our test programs with SVE enabled provide a trivial assembly library
with a C callable function that executes RDVL. Since these interfaces
also control behaviour on exec*() provide a trivial wrapper program which
reports the currently configured vector length on stdout, tests can use
this to verify that behaviour on exec*() is as expected.
In preparation for providing similar helper functionality for SME, the
Scalable Matrix Extension, which allows separately configured vector
lengths to be read back both the assembler function and wrapper binary
have SVE included in their name.

- MTE asynchronous support for KASan. Previously only synchronous
(slower) mode was supported. Asynchronous is faster but does not allow
precise identification of the illegal access.
- Run kernel mode SIMD with softirqs disabled. This allows using NEON in
softirq context for crypto performance improvements. The conditional
yield support is modified to take softirqs into account and reduce the

Add some tests that verify that BTI functions correctly for static binaries
built with and without BTI support, verifying that SIGILL is generated when
expected and is not generated in other situations.
Since BTI support is still being rolled out in distributions these tests
are built entirely free standing, no libc support is used at all so none
of the standard helper functions for kselftest can be used and we open
code everything. This also means we aren't testing the kernel support for
the dynamic linker, though the test program can be readily adapted for
that once it becomes something that we can reliably build and run.
These tests were originally written by Dave Martin, I've adapted them for
kselftest, mainly around the build system and the output format.

The MTE selftests create temporary files in /dev/shm, for later mmap-ing
them. When there is no tmpfs mounted on /dev/shm, or /dev/shm does not
exist in the first place (on minimal filesystems), the error message is
not giving good hints:

Add a perror() call, that gives both the filename and the actual error
reason, so that users get a chance of correcting that.

When clang finds a header file on the command line, it wants to
precompile that, which would end up in a separate output file.
Specifying -o on that same command line collides with that effort, so
the compiler complains:
clang: error: cannot specify -o when generating multiple output files
Since we are not really after a precompiled header, just drop the header
file from the command line, by removing it from the list of source
files in the Makefile.

At the moment we check the compiler's ability to compile MTE enabled
code, but guard all the Makefile rules by it. As a consequence a broken
or not capable compiler just doesn't do anything, and make happily
returns without any error message, but with no programs created.
Since the MTE feature is only supported by recent aarch64 compilers (not
all stable distro compilers support it), having an explicit message
seems like a good idea. To not break building multiple targets, we let
make proceed without errors.

To check whether the CPU and kernel support the MTE features we want
to test, we use an (emulated) CPU ID register read. However we only
check against a very particular feature version (0b0010), even though
the ARM ARM promises ID register features to be backwards compatible.
While this could be fixed by using ">=" instead of "==", we should
actually use the explicit HWCAP2_MTE hardware capability, exposed by the
kernel via the ELF auxiliary vectors.
That moves this responsibility to the kernel, and fixes running the
tests on machines with FEAT_MTE3 capability.

The GCC manual suggests to use -pthread, when linking with the PThread
library, also to add this switch to both the compilation and linking
stages.
Do as the manual says, to fix compilation with Ubuntu's 20.04 toolchain,

The mte selftest Makefile contains a check for GCC, to add the memtag
-march flag to the compiler options. This check fails if the compiler
is not explicitly specified, so reverts to the standard "cc", in which
case --version doesn't mention the "gcc" string we match against:

This will not add the -march switch to the command line, so compilation
fails:

Actually clang accepts the same -march option as well, so we can just

The "First Fault Register" (FFR) is an SVE register that mimics a
predicate register, but clears bits when a load or store fails to handle
an element of a vector. The supposed usage scenario is to initialise
this register (using SETFFR), then *read* it later on to learn about
elements that failed to load or store. Explicit writes to this register
using the WRFFR instruction are only supposed to *restore* values
previously read from the register (for context-switching only).
As the manual describes, this register holds only certain values, it:
"... contains a monotonic predicate value, in which starting from bit 0
there are zero or more 1 bits, followed only by 0 bits in any remaining
bit positions."
Any other value is UNPREDICTABLE and is not supposed to be "restored"
into the register.
The SVE test currently tries to write a signature pattern into the
register, which is *not* a canonical FFR value. Apparently the existing
setups treat UNPREDICTABLE as "read-as-written", but a new
implementation actually only stores canonical values. As a consequence,
the sve-test fails immediately when comparing the FFR value:

Fix this by only populating the FFR with proper canonical values.
Effectively the requirement described above limits us to 17 unique
values over 16 bits worth of FFR, so we condense our signature down to 4
bits (2 bits from the PID, 2 bits from the generation) and generate the
canonical pattern from it. Any bits describing elements above the
minimum 128 bit are set to 0.
This aligns the FFR usage to the architecture and fixes the test on
microarchitectures implementing FFR in a more restricted way.

This test is specific to MTE and verifies that the GCR_EL1 register is
context switched correctly.
It spawns 1024 processes and each process spawns 5 threads. Each thread
writes a random setting of GCR_EL1 through the prctl() system call and
reads it back verifying that it is the same. If the values are not the
same it reports a failure.
Note: The test has been extended to verify that even SYNC and ASYNC mode
setting is preserved correctly over context switching.
