The locate_module_kobject() function looks up an existing
module_kobject for a given module name. If it cannot find the
corresponding module_kobject, it creates one for the given name.
This commit renames locate_module_kobject() to
lookup_or_create_module_kobject() to better describe its operations.
This doesn't change anything functionality wise.

bpf_prog_aux->func field might be NULL if program does not have
subprograms except for main sub-program. The fixed commit does
bpf_prog_aux->func access unconditionally, which might lead to null
pointer dereference.
The bug could be triggered by replacing the following BPF program:

When processing calls to global sub-programs, verifier decides whether
to invalidate all packet pointers in current state depending on the
changes_pkt_data property of the global sub-program.
Because of this, an extension program replacing a global sub-program
must be compatible with changes_pkt_data property of the sub-program
being replaced.
This commit:
- adds changes_pkt_data flag to struct bpf_prog_aux:
- this flag is set in check_cfg() for main sub-program;
- in jit_subprogs() for other sub-programs;
- modifies bpf_check_attach_btf_id() to check changes_pkt_data flag;
- moves call to check_attach_btf_id() after the call to check_cfg(),
because it needs changes_pkt_data flag to be set:

When processing calls to certain helpers, verifier invalidates all
packet pointers in a current state. For example, consider the
following program:

After a call to bpf_skb_pull_data() the pointer 'p' can't be used
safely. See function filter.c:bpf_helper_changes_pkt_data() for a list
of such helpers.
At the moment verifier invalidates packet pointers when processing
helper function calls, and does not traverse global sub-programs when
processing calls to global sub-programs. This means that calls to
helpers done from global sub-programs do not invalidate pointers in
the caller state. E.g. the program above is unsafe, but is not
rejected by verifier.
This commit fixes the omission by computing field
bpf_subprog_info->changes_pkt_data for each sub-program before main
verification pass.
changes_pkt_data should be set if:
- subprogram calls helper for which bpf_helper_changes_pkt_data
returns true;
- subprogram calls a global function,
for which bpf_subprog_info->changes_pkt_data should be set.
The verifier.c:check_cfg() pass is modified to compute this
information. The commit relies on depth first instruction traversal
done by check_cfg() and absence of recursive function calls:
- check_cfg() would eventually visit every call to subprogram S in a
state when S is fully explored;
- when S is fully explored:
- every direct helper call within S is explored
(and thus changes_pkt_data is set if needed);
- every call to subprogram S1 called by S was visited with S1 fully
explored (and thus S inherits changes_pkt_data from S1).
The downside of such approach is that dead code elimination is not
taken into account: if a helper call inside global function is dead
because of current configuration, verifier would conservatively assume
that the call occurs for the purpose of the changes_pkt_data
computation.

Use BPF helper number instead of function pointer in
bpf_helper_changes_pkt_data(). This would simplify usage of this
function in verifier.c:check_cfg() (in a follow-up patch),
where only helper number is easily available and there is no real need
to lookup helper proto.

It has been reported that trace_seq_to_buffer() tries to copy more data
than PAGE_SIZE to buf. Therefore, to prevent this, we should use the
smaller of trace_seq_used(&iter->seq) and PAGE_SIZE as an argument.

Move the get_ctx(child_ctx) call and the child_event->ctx assignment to
occur immediately after the child event is allocated. Ensure that
child_event->ctx is non-NULL before any subsequent error path within
inherit_event calls free_event(), satisfying the assumptions of the
cleanup code.
Details:
There's no clear Fixes tag, because this bug is a side-effect of
multiple interacting commits over time (up to 15 years old), not
a single regression.
The code initially incremented refcount then assigned context
immediately after the child_event was created. Later, an early
validity check for child_event was added before the
refcount/assignment. Even later, a WARN_ON_ONCE() cleanup check was
added, assuming event->ctx is valid if the pmu_ctx is valid.
The problem is that the WARN_ON_ONCE() could trigger after the initial
check passed but before child_event->ctx was assigned, violating its
precondition. The solution is to assign child_event->ctx right after
its initial validation. This ensures the context exists for any
subsequent checks or cleanup routines, resolving the WARN_ON_ONCE().
To resolve it, defer the refcount update and child_event->ctx assignment
directly after child_event->pmu_ctx is set but before checking if the
parent event is orphaned. The cleanup routine depends on
event->pmu_ctx being non-NULL before it verifies event->ctx is
non-NULL. This also maintains the author's original intent of passing
in child_ctx to find_get_pmu_context before its refcount/assignment.

If we attach fexit/fmod_ret to __noreturn functions, it will cause an
issue that the bpf trampoline image will be left over even if the bpf
link has been destroyed. Take attaching do_exit() with fexit for example.
The fexit works as follows,
bpf_trampoline
+ __bpf_tramp_enter
+ percpu_ref_get(&tr->pcref);
+ call do_exit()
+ __bpf_tramp_exit
+ percpu_ref_put(&tr->pcref);
Since do_exit() never returns, the refcnt of the trampoline image is
never decremented, preventing it from being freed. That can be verified
with as follows,

In this patch, all functions annotated with __noreturn are rejected, except
for the following cases:
- Functions that result in a system reboot, such as panic,
machine_real_restart and rust_begin_unwind
- Functions that are never executed by tasks, such as rest_init and
cpu_startup_entry
- Functions implemented in assembly, such as rewind_stack_and_make_dead and
xen_cpu_bringup_again, lack an associated BTF ID.
With this change, attaching fexit probes to functions like do_exit() will
be rejected.

The current cgrp storage has a percpu counter, bpf_cgrp_storage_busy,
to detect potential deadlock at a spin_lock that the local storage
acquires during new storage creation.
There are false positives. It turns out to be too noisy in
production. For example, a bpf prog may be doing a
bpf_cgrp_storage_get on map_a. An IRQ comes in and triggers
another bpf_cgrp_storage_get on a different map_b. It will then
trigger the false positive deadlock check in the percpu counter.
On top of that, both are doing lookup only and no need to create
new storage, so practically it does not need to acquire
the spin_lock.
The bpf_task_storage_get already has a strategy to minimize this
false positive by only failing if the bpf_task_storage_get needs
to create a new storage and the percpu counter is busy. Creating
a new storage is the only time it must acquire the spin_lock.
This patch borrows the same idea. Unlike task storage that
has a separate variant for tracing (_recur) and non-tracing, this
patch stays with one bpf_cgrp_storage_get helper to keep it simple
for now in light of the upcoming res_spin_lock.
The variable could potentially use a better name noTbusy instead
of nobusy. This patch follows the same naming in
bpf_task_storage_get for now.
I have tested it by temporarily adding noinline to
the cgroup_storage_lookup(), traced it by fentry, and the fentry
program succeeded in calling bpf_cgrp_storage_get().

The handling of the limits_changed flag in struct sugov_policy needs to
be explicitly synchronized to ensure that cpufreq policy limits updates
will not be missed in some cases.
Without that synchronization it is theoretically possible that
the limits_changed update in sugov_should_update_freq() will be
reordered with respect to the reads of the policy limits in
cpufreq_driver_resolve_freq() and in that case, if the limits_changed
update in sugov_limits() clobbers the one in sugov_should_update_freq(),
the new policy limits may not take effect for a long time.
Likewise, the limits_changed update in sugov_limits() may theoretically
get reordered with respect to the updates of the policy limits in
cpufreq_set_policy() and if sugov_should_update_freq() runs between
them, the policy limits change may be missed.
To ensure that the above situations will not take place, add memory
barriers preventing the reordering in question from taking place and
add READ_ONCE() and WRITE_ONCE() annotations around all of the
limits_changed flag updates to prevent the compiler from messing up
with that code.

The current method to take into account uclamp hints when estimating the
target frequency can end in a situation where the selected target
frequency is finally higher than uclamp hints, whereas there are no real
needs. Such cases mainly happen because we are currently mixing the
traditional scheduler utilization signal with the uclamp performance
hints. By adding these 2 metrics, we loose an important information when
it comes to select the target frequency, and we have to make some
assumptions which can't fit all cases.
Rework the interface between the scheduler and schedutil governor in order
to propagate all information down to the cpufreq governor.
effective_cpu_util() interface changes and now returns the actual
utilization of the CPU with 2 optional inputs:
- The minimum performance for this CPU; typically the capacity to handle
the deadline task and the interrupt pressure. But also uclamp_min
request when available.
- The maximum targeting performance for this CPU which reflects the
maximum level that we would like to not exceed. By default it will be
the CPU capacity but can be reduced because of some performance hints
set with uclamp. The value can be lower than actual utilization and/or
min performance level.
A new sugov_effective_cpu_perf() interface is also available to compute
the final performance level that is targeted for the CPU, after applying
some cpufreq headroom and taking into account all inputs.
With these 2 functions, schedutil is now able to decide when it must go
above uclamp hints. It now also has a generic way to get the min
performance level.
The dependency between energy model and cpufreq governor and its headroom
policy doesn't exist anymore.
eenv_pd_max_util() asks schedutil for the targeted performance after
applying the impact of the waking task.

Remove the rq::cpu_capacity_orig field and use arch_scale_cpu_capacity()
instead.
The scheduler uses 3 methods to get access to a CPU's max compute capacity:
- arch_scale_cpu_capacity(cpu) which is the default way to get a CPU's capacity.
- cpu_capacity_orig field which is periodically updated with
arch_scale_cpu_capacity().
- capacity_orig_of(cpu) which encapsulates rq->cpu_capacity_orig.
There is no real need to save the value returned by arch_scale_cpu_capacity()
in struct rq. arch_scale_cpu_capacity() returns:
- either a per_cpu variable.
- or a const value for systems which have only one capacity.
Remove rq::cpu_capacity_orig and use arch_scale_cpu_capacity() everywhere.
No functional changes.
Some performance tests on Arm64:
- small SMP device (hikey): no noticeable changes
- HMP device (RB5): hackbench shows minor improvement (1-2%)
- large smp (thx2): hackbench and tbench shows minor improvement (1%)

The trace event verifier checks the formats of trace events to make sure
that they do not point at memory that is not in the trace event itself or
in data that will never be freed. If an event references data that was
allocated when the event triggered and that same data is freed before the
event is read, then the kernel can crash by reading freed memory.
The verifier runs at boot up (or module load) and scans the print formats
of the events and checks their arguments to make sure that dereferenced
pointers are safe. If the format uses "%*p.." the verifier will ignore it,
and that could be dangerous. Cover this case as well.
Also add to the sample code a use case of "%*pbl".

Switch away from using sha1 for module signing by default and use the
more modern sha512 instead, which is what among others Arch, Fedora,
RHEL, and Ubuntu are currently using for their kernels.
Sha1 has not been considered secure against well-funded opponents since
2005[1]; since 2011 the NIST and other organizations furthermore

The filter string testing uses strncpy_from_kernel/user_nofault() to
retrieve the string to test the filter against. The if() statement was
incorrect as it considered 0 as a fault, when it is only negative that it
faulted.
Running the following commands:

The maximum of the ftrace hash bits is made fls(32) in
register_ftrace_direct(), which seems illogical. So, we fix it by making

Commit 8e461a1cb4 ("cpufreq: schedutil: Fix superfluous updates caused
by need_freq_update") modified sugov_should_update_freq() to set the
need_freq_update flag only for drivers with CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS
set, but that flag generally needs to be set when the policy limits
change because the driver callback may need to be invoked for the new
limits to take effect.
However, if the return value of cpufreq_driver_resolve_freq() after
applying the new limits is still equal to the previously selected
frequency, the driver callback needs to be invoked only in the case
when CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS is set (which means that the driver
specifically wants its callback to be invoked every time the policy
limits change).
Update the code accordingly to avoid missing policy limits changes for
drivers without CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS.

When the kernel contains a large number of functions that can be traced,
the loop in ftrace_graph_set_hash() may take a lot of time to execute.
This may trigger the softlockup watchdog.
Add cond_resched() within the loop to allow the kernel to remain
responsive even when processing a large number of functions.
This matches the cond_resched() that is used in other locations of the
code that iterates over all functions that can be traced.

Because the synthetic event's "wakee" field is created as a dynamic string
(even though the string copied is not). The print format to print the
dynamic string changed from "%*s" to "%s" because another location
(__set_synth_event_print_fmt()) exported this to user space, and user
space did not need that. But it is still used in print_synth_event(), and
the output looks like:

Currently, when a lock class is allocated, nr_unused_locks will be
increased by 1, until it gets used: nr_unused_locks will be decreased by
1 in mark_lock(). However, one scenario is missed: a lock class may be
zapped without even being used once. This could result into a situation
that nr_unused_locks != 0 but no unused lock class is active in the
system, and when `cat /proc/lockdep_stats`, a WARN_ON() will
be triggered in a CONFIG_DEBUG_LOCKDEP=y kernel:

When __ftrace_event_enable_disable invokes the class callback to
unregister the event, the return value is not reported up to the
caller, hence leading to event unregister failures being silently
ignored.
This patch assigns the ret variable to the invocation of the
event unregister callback, so that its return value is stored
and reported to the caller, and it raises a warning in case
of error.

It is not necessary to call stop_per_cpu_kthreads() which stops osnoise
kthread for every other CPUs in the system if a failure occurs during
hotplug of a certain CPU.
For start_per_cpu_kthreads(), if the start_kthread() call fails,
this function calls stop_per_cpu_kthreads() to handle the error.
Therefore, similarly, there is no need to call stop_per_cpu_kthreads()
again within start_kthread().
So just remove stop_per_cpu_kthreads() from start_kthread to solve this issue.

The printk format for synth event uses "%.*s" to print string fields,
but then only passes the pointer part as var arg.
Replace %.*s with %s as the C string is guaranteed to be null-terminated.
The output in print fmt should never have been updated as __get_str()
handles the string limit because it can access the length of the string in
the string meta data that is saved in the ring buffer.

Currently, using synth_event_delete() will fail if the event is being
used (tracing in progress), but that is normally done in the module exit
function. At that stage, failing is problematic as returning a non-zero
status means the module will become locked (impossible to unload or
reload again).
Instead, ensure the module exit function does not get called in the
first place by increasing the module refcnt when the event is enabled.

Kairui reported a UAF issue in print_graph_function_flags() during
ftrace stress testing [1]. This issue can be reproduced if puting a
'mdelay(10)' after 'mutex_unlock(&trace_types_lock)' in s_start(),
and executing the following script:
$ echo function_graph > current_tracer
$ cat trace > /dev/null &
$ sleep 5 # Ensure the 'cat' reaches the 'mdelay(10)' point
$ echo timerlat > current_tracer
The root cause lies in the two calls to print_graph_function_flags
within print_trace_line during each s_show():
* One through 'iter->trace->print_line()';
* Another through 'event->funcs->trace()', which is hidden in
print_trace_fmt() before print_trace_line returns.
Tracer switching only updates the former, while the latter continues
to use the print_line function of the old tracer, which in the script
above is print_graph_function_flags.
Moreover, when switching from the 'function_graph' tracer to the
'timerlat' tracer, s_start only calls graph_trace_close of the
'function_graph' tracer to free 'iter->private', but does not set
it to NULL. This provides an opportunity for 'event->funcs->trace()'
to use an invalid 'iter->private'.
To fix this issue, set 'iter->private' to NULL immediately after
freeing it in graph_trace_close(), ensuring that an invalid pointer
is not passed to other tracers. Additionally, clean up the unnecessary
'iter->private = NULL' during each 'cat trace' when using wakeup and
irqsoff tracers.

The function event_{hist,hist_debug}_open() maintains the refcount of
'file->tr' and 'file' through tracing_open_file_tr(). However, it does
not roll back these counts on subsequent failure paths, resulting in a
refcount leak.
A very obvious case is that if the hist/hist_debug file belongs to a
specific instance, the refcount leak will prevent the deletion of that
instance, as it relies on the condition 'tr->ref == 1' within
__remove_instance().
Fix this by calling tracing_release_file_tr() on all failure paths in
event_{hist,hist_debug}_open() to correct the refcount.

Since POLLIN will not be flushed until the hist file is read, the user
needs to repeatedly read() and poll() on the hist file for monitoring the
event continuously. But the read() is somewhat redundant when the user is
only monitoring for event updates.
Add POLLPRI poll event on the hist file so the event returns when a
histogram is updated after open(), poll() or read(). Thus it is possible
to wait for the next event without having to issue a read().

Add poll syscall support on the `hist` file. The Waiter will be waken
up when the histogram is updated with POLLIN.
Currently, there is no way to wait for a specific event in userspace.
So user needs to peek the `trace` periodicaly, or wait on `trace_pipe`.
But it is not a good idea to peek at the `trace` for an event that
randomly happens. And `trace_pipe` is not coming back until a page is
filled with events.
This allows a user to wait for a specific event on the `hist` file. User
can set a histogram trigger on the event which they want to monitor
and poll() on its `hist` file. Since this poll() returns POLLIN, the next
poll() will return soon unless a read() happens on that hist file.
NOTE: To read the hist file again, you must set the file offset to 0,
but just for monitoring the event, you may not need to read the
histogram.

There are a couple functions in trace_events_hist.c that have "goto out" or
equivalent on error in order to release locks that were taken. This can be
error prone or just simply make the code more complex.
Switch every location that ends with unlocking a mutex on error over to
using the guard(mutex)() infrastructure to let the compiler worry about
releasing locks. This makes the code easier to read and understand.

A trace instance may only need to enable specific events. As the eventfs
directory of an instance currently creates all events which adds overhead,
allow internal instances to be created with just the events in systems
that they care about. This currently only deals with systems and not
individual events, but this should bring down the overhead of creating
instances for specific use cases quite bit.
The trace_array_get_by_name() now has another parameter "systems". This
parameter is a const string pointer of a comma/space separated list of
event systems that should be created by the trace_array. (Note if the
trace_array already exists, this parameter is ignored).
The list of systems is saved and if a module is loaded, its events will
not be added unless the system for those events also match the systems
string.

The perf events code fails to account for total_time_enabled of
inactive events.
Here is a failure case for accounting total_time_enabled for
CPU PMU events:

The two events above are opened on two different CPU PMUs, for example,
each event is opened for a cluster in an Arm big.LITTLE system, they
will never run on the same CPU. In theory, the total enabled time should
be same for both events, as two events are opened and closed together.
As the result show, the two events' total enabled time including
child event is different (2289429840 vs 1950025700).
This is because child events are not accounted properly
if a event is INACTIVE state when the task exits:

The problem is the time accumulation happens prior to child event's
time updating. Thus, it misses to account the last period's time when
the event exits.
The perf core layer follows the rule that timekeeping is tied to state
change. To address the issue, make __perf_remove_from_context()
handle the task exit case by passing 'DETACH_EXIT' to it and
invoke perf_event_state() for state alongside with accounting the time.
Then, perf_child_detach() populates the time into the parent's time metrics.
After this patch, the bug is fixed:

The console_sem -> pi_lock dependency is due to calling try_to_wake_up()
while holding the console_sem raw_spinlock. This dependency can be broken
by using wake_q to do the wakeup instead of calling try_to_wake_up()
under the console_sem lock. This will also make the semaphore's
raw_spinlock become a terminal lock without taking any further locks
underneath it.
The hrtimer_bases.lock is a raw_spinlock while zone->lock is a
spinlock. The hrtimer_bases.lock -> zone->lock dependency happens via

Normally a raw_spinlock to spinlock dependency is not legitimate
and will be warned if CONFIG_PROVE_RAW_LOCK_NESTING is enabled,
but debug_objects_fill_pool() is an exception as it explicitly
allows this dependency for non-PREEMPT_RT kernel without causing
PROVE_RAW_LOCK_NESTING lockdep splat. As a result, this dependency is
legitimate and not a bug.
Anyway, semaphore is the only locking primitive left that is still
using try_to_wake_up() to do wakeup inside critical section, all the
other locking primitives had been migrated to use wake_q to do wakeup
outside of the critical section. It is also possible that there are
other circular locking dependencies involving printk/console_sem or
other existing/new semaphores lurking somewhere which may show up in
the future. Let just do the migration now to wake_q to avoid headache
like this.

The ftrace selftest reported a failure because writing -1 to
sched_rt_runtime_us returns -EBUSY. This happens when the possible
CPUs are different from active CPUs.
Active CPUs are part of one root domain, while remaining CPUs are part
of def_root_domain. Since active cpumask is being used, this results in
cpus=0 when a non active CPUs is used in the loop.
Fix it by looping over the online CPUs instead for validating the
bandwidth calculations.

There is a fairly obvious race between perf_init_event() doing
idr_find() and perf_pmu_register() doing idr_alloc() with an
incompletely initialized PMU pointer.
Avoid by doing idr_alloc() on a NULL pointer to register the id, and
swizzling the real struct pmu pointer at the end using idr_replace().
Also making sure to not set struct pmu members after publishing
the struct pmu, duh.
[ introduce idr_cmpxchg() in order to better handle the idr_replace()
error case -- if it were to return an unexpected pointer, it will
already have replaced the value and there is no going back. ]

Patch series "powerpc/crash: use generic crashkernel reservation", v3.
Commit 0ab97169aa ("crash_core: add generic function to do reservation")
added a generic function to reserve crashkernel memory. So let's use the
same function on powerpc and remove the architecture-specific code that
essentially does the same thing.
The generic crashkernel reservation also provides a way to split the
crashkernel reservation into high and low memory reservations, which can
be enabled for powerpc in the future.
Additionally move powerpc to use generic APIs to locate memory hole for
kexec segments while loading kdump kernel.
This patch (of 7):
kexec_elf_load() loads an ELF executable and sets the address of the
lowest PT_LOAD section to the address held by the lowest_load_addr
function argument.
To determine the lowest PT_LOAD address, a local variable lowest_addr
(type unsigned long) is initialized to UINT_MAX. After loading each
PT_LOAD, its address is compared to lowest_addr. If a loaded PT_LOAD
address is lower, lowest_addr is updated. However, setting lowest_addr to
UINT_MAX won't work when the kernel image is loaded above 4G, as the
returned lowest PT_LOAD address would be invalid. This is resolved by
initializing lowest_addr to ULONG_MAX instead.
This issue was discovered while implementing crashkernel high/low
reservation on the PowerPC architecture.

Ever since commit b756a3b5e7 ("mm: device exclusive memory access") we
can return with a device-exclusive entry from page_vma_mapped_walk().
__replace_page() is not prepared for that, so teach it about these PFN
swap PTEs. Note that device-private entries are so far not applicable on
that path, because GUP would never have returned such folios (conversion
to device-private happens by page migration, not in-place conversion of
the PTE).
There is a race between GUP and us locking the folio to look it up using
page_vma_mapped_walk(), so this is likely a fix (unless something else
could prevent that race, but it doesn't look like). pte_pfn() on
something that is not a present pte could give use garbage, and we'd
wrongly mess up the mapcount because it was already adjusted by calling
folio_remove_rmap_pte() when making the entry device-exclusive.

bpf_send_signal_common() uses preemptible() to check whether or not the
current context is preemptible. If it is preemptible, it will use
irq_work to send the signal asynchronously instead of trying to hold a
spin-lock, because spin-lock is sleepable under PREEMPT_RT.
However, preemptible() depends on CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT. When
CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT is turned off (e.g., CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y),
!preemptible() will be evaluated as 1 and bpf_send_signal_common() will
use irq_work unconditionally.
Fix it by unfolding "!preemptible()" and using "preempt_count() != 0 ||
irqs_disabled()" instead.

If track_pfn_copy() fails, we already added the dst VMA to the maple
tree. As fork() fails, we'll cleanup the maple tree, and stumble over
the dst VMA for which we neither performed any reservation nor copied
any page tables.
Consequently untrack_pfn() will see VM_PAT and try obtaining the
PAT information from the page table -- which fails because the page
table was not copied.
The easiest fix would be to simply clear the VM_PAT flag of the dst VMA
if track_pfn_copy() fails. However, the whole thing is about "simply"
clearing the VM_PAT flag is shaky as well: if we passed track_pfn_copy()
and performed a reservation, but copying the page tables fails, we'll
simply clear the VM_PAT flag, not properly undoing the reservation ...
which is also wrong.
So let's fix it properly: set the VM_PAT flag only if the reservation
succeeded (leaving it clear initially), and undo the reservation if
anything goes wrong while copying the page tables: clearing the VM_PAT
flag after undoing the reservation.
Note that any copied page table entries will get zapped when the VMA will
get removed later, after copy_page_range() succeeded; as VM_PAT is not set
then, we won't try cleaning VM_PAT up once more and untrack_pfn() will be
happy. Note that leaving these page tables in place without a reservation
is not a problem, as we are aborting fork(); this process will never run.

The poll man page says POLLRDNORM is equivalent to POLLIN. For poll(),
it seems that if user sets pollfd with POLLRDNORM in userspace, perf_poll
will not return until timeout even if perf_output_wakeup called,
whereas POLLIN returns.

Currently, watch_queue_set_size() modifies the pipe buffers charged to
user->pipe_bufs without updating the pipe->nr_accounted on the pipe
itself, due to the if (!pipe_has_watch_queue()) test in
pipe_resize_ring(). This means that when the pipe is ultimately freed,
we decrement user->pipe_bufs by something other than what than we had
charged to it, potentially leading to an underflow. This in turn can
cause subsequent too_many_pipe_buffers_soft() tests to fail with -EPERM.
To remedy this, explicitly account for the pipe usage in
watch_queue_set_size() to match the number set via account_pipe_buffers()
(It's unclear why watch_queue_set_size() does not update nr_accounted;
it may be due to intentional overprovisioning in watch_queue_set_size()?)

equal to p's 'cpu cgroup' (sched_get_task_group()). E.g. both are

Turns out that the regression is related to sgs->group_util in
group_is_overloaded() and group_has_capacity(). If (1) isn't called for
all the 'spawn' tasks then sgs->group_util is ~900 and
sgs->group_capacity = 1024 (single CPU sched domain) and this leads to
group_is_overloaded() returning true (2) and group_has_capacity() false
(3) much more often compared to the case when (1) is called.
I.e. there are much more cases of 'group_is_overloaded' and
'group_fully_busy' in WF_FORK wakeup sched_balance_find_dst_cpu() which
then returns much more often a CPU != smp_processor_id() (5).
This isn't good for these extremely short running tasks (FORK + EXIT)
and also involves calling sched_balance_find_dst_group_cpu() unnecessary
(single CPU sched domain).
Instead if (1) is called for 'p->flags & PF_EXITING' then the path
(4),(6) is taken much more often.

The function __bpf_ringbuf_reserve is invoked from a tracepoint, which
disables preemption. Using spinlock_t in this context can lead to a
"sleep in atomic" warning in the RT variant. This issue is illustrated

The timerslack_ns setting is used to specify how much the hardware
timers should be delayed, to potentially dispatch multiple timers in a
single interrupt. This is a performance optimization. Timers of
realtime tasks (having a realtime scheduling policy) should not be
delayed.
This logic was inconsitently applied to the hrtimers, leading to delays
of realtime tasks which used timed waits for events (e.g. condition
variables). Due to the downstream override of the slack for rt tasks,
the procfs reported incorrect (non-zero) timerslack_ns values.
This is changed by setting the timer_slack_ns task attribute to 0 for
all tasks with a rt policy. By that, downstream users do not need to
specially handle rt tasks (w.r.t. the slack), and the procfs entry
shows the correct value of "0". Setting non-zero slack values (either
via procfs or PR_SET_TIMERSLACK) on tasks with a rt policy is ignored,
as stated in "man 2 PR_SET_TIMERSLACK":
Timer slack is not applied to threads that are scheduled under a
real-time scheduling policy (see sched_setscheduler(2)).
The special handling of timerslack on rt tasks in downstream users
is removed as well.

child_cfs_rq_on_list attempts to convert a 'prev' pointer to a cfs_rq.
This 'prev' pointer can originate from struct rq's leaf_cfs_rq_list,
making the conversion invalid and potentially leading to memory
corruption. Depending on the relative positions of leaf_cfs_rq_list and
the task group (tg) pointer within the struct, this can cause a memory
fault or access garbage data.
The issue arises in list_add_leaf_cfs_rq, where both
cfs_rq->leaf_cfs_rq_list and rq->leaf_cfs_rq_list are added to the same
leaf list. Also, rq->tmp_alone_branch can be set to rq->leaf_cfs_rq_list.
This adds a check `if (prev == &rq->leaf_cfs_rq_list)` after the main
conditional in child_cfs_rq_on_list. This ensures that the container_of
operation will convert a correct cfs_rq struct.
This check is sufficient because only cfs_rqs on the same CPU are added
to the list, so verifying the 'prev' pointer against the current rq's list
head is enough.
Fixes a potential memory corruption issue that due to current struct
layout might not be manifesting as a crash but could lead to unpredictable
behavior when the layout changes.

placed pmus_lock inside pmus_srcu, this makes perf_pmu_unregister()
trip lockdep.
Move the locking about such that only pmu_idr and pmus (list) are
modified while holding pmus_lock. This avoids doing synchronize_srcu()
while holding pmus_lock and all is well again.

Fix a memory leak when a tprobe is defined with $retval. This
combination is not allowed, but the parse_symbol_and_return() does
not free the *symbol which should not be used if it returns the error.
Thus, it leaks the *symbol memory in that error path.

This is a long standing problem, which probably got more visible with
the recent printk changes. Something does a task wakeup and the
scheduler sets the NEED_RESCHED flag. cond_resched() sees it set and
invokes schedule() from a completely bogus context. The scheduler
enables interrupts after context switching, which causes the above
warning at the end.
Quite some of the code paths in syscore_suspend()/resume() can result in
triggering a wakeup with the exactly same consequences. They might not
have done so yet, but as they share a lot of code with normal operations
it's just a question of time.
The problem only affects the PREEMPT_NONE and PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY scheduling
models. Full preemption is not affected as cond_resched() is disabled and
the preemption check preemptible() takes the interrupt disabled flag into
account.
Cure the problem by adding a corresponding check into cond_resched().

A low attr::freq value cannot be set via IOC_PERIOD on some platforms.
The perf_event_check_period() introduced in:
81ec3f3c4c ("perf/x86: Add check_period PMU callback")
was intended to check the period, rather than the frequency.
A low frequency may be mistakenly rejected by limit_period().

The next time a hist with name is registered, it causes an u-a-f bug and
the kernel can crash.
Move the code around such that if event_trigger_register() succeeds, the
next thing called is hist_trigger_enable() which adds it to the list.
A bunch of actions is called if get_named_trigger_data() returns false.
But that doesn't need to be called after event_trigger_register(), so it
can be moved up, allowing event_trigger_register() to be called just
before hist_trigger_enable() keeping them together and allowing the
file->triggers to be properly populated.

The cause is that zero pfn is set to the PTE without increasing the RSS
count in mfill_atomic_pte_zeropage() and the refcount of zero folio does
not increase accordingly. Then, the operation on the same pfn is performed
in uprobe_write_opcode()->__replace_page() to unconditional decrease the
RSS count and old_folio's refcount.
Therefore, two bugs are introduced:
1. The RSS count is incorrect, when process exit, the check_mm() report
error "Bad rss-count".
2. The reserved folio (zero folio) is freed when folio->refcount is zero,
then free_pages_prepare->free_page_is_bad() report error
"Bad page state".
There is more, the following warning could also theoretically be triggered:
__replace_page()
-> ...
-> folio_remove_rmap_pte()
-> VM_WARN_ON_FOLIO(is_zero_folio(folio), folio)
Considering that uprobe hit on the zero folio is a very rare case, just
reject zero old folio immediately after get_user_page_vma_remote().

Syskaller triggers a warning due to prev_epc->pmu != next_epc->pmu in
perf_event_swap_task_ctx_data(). vmcore shows that two lists have the same
perf_event_pmu_context, but not in the same order.
The problem is that the order of pmu_ctx_list for the parent is impacted by
the time when an event/PMU is added. While the order for a child is
impacted by the event order in the pinned_groups and flexible_groups. So
the order of pmu_ctx_list in the parent and child may be different.
To fix this problem, insert the perf_event_pmu_context to its proper place
after iteration of the pmu_ctx_list.
The follow testcase can trigger above warning:

The testcase first opens an LBR event, so it will allocate task_ctx_data,
and then open tracepoint and software events, so the parent context will
have 3 different perf_event_pmu_contexts. On inheritance, child ctx will
insert the perf_event_pmu_context in another order and the warning will
trigger.

The function tracer should record the preemption level at the point when
the function is invoked. If the tracing subsystem decrement the
preemption counter it needs to correct this before feeding the data into
the trace buffer. This was broken in the commit cited below while
shifting the preempt-disabled section.
Use tracing_gen_ctx_dec() which properly subtracts one from the
preemption counter on a preemptible kernel.

In [1] it was reported that the acct(2) system call can be used to
trigger NULL deref in cases where it is set to write to a file that
triggers an internal lookup. This can e.g., happen when pointing acc(2)
to /sys/power/resume. At the point the where the write to this file
happens the calling task has already exited and called exit_fs(). A
lookup will thus trigger a NULL-deref when accessing current->fs.
Reorganize the code so that the the final write happens from the
workqueue but with the caller's credentials. This preserves the
(strange) permission model and has almost no regression risk.
This api should stop to exist though.

The generic_map_lookup_batch currently returns EINTR if it fails with
ENOENT and retries several times on bpf_map_copy_value. The next batch
would start from the same location, presuming it's a transient issue.
This is incorrect if a map can actually have "holes", i.e.
"get_next_key" can return a key that does not point to a valid value. At
least the array of maps type may contain such holes legitly. Right now
these holes show up, generic batch lookup cannot proceed any more. It
will always fail with EINTR errors.
Rather, do not retry in generic_map_lookup_batch. If it finds a non
existing element, skip to the next key. This simple solution comes with
a price that transient errors may not be recovered, and the iteration
might cycle back to the first key under parallel deletion. For example,
Hou Tao <houtao@huaweicloud.com> pointed out a following scenario:
For LPM trie map:
(1) ->map_get_next_key(map, prev_key, key) returns a valid key
(2) bpf_map_copy_value() return -ENOMENT
It means the key must be deleted concurrently.
(3) goto next_key
It swaps the prev_key and key
(4) ->map_get_next_key(map, prev_key, key) again
prev_key points to a non-existing key, for LPM trie it will treat just
like prev_key=NULL case, the returned key will be duplicated.
With the retry logic, the iteration can continue to the key next to the
deleted one. But if we directly skip to the next key, the iteration loop
would restart from the first key for the lpm_trie type.
However, not all races may be recovered. For example, if current key is
deleted after instead of before bpf_map_copy_value, or if the prev_key
also gets deleted, then the loop will still restart from the first key
for lpm_tire anyway. For generic lookup it might be better to stay
simple, i.e. just skip to the next key. To guarantee that the output
keys are not duplicated, it is better to implement map type specific
batch operations, which can properly lock the trie and synchronize with
concurrent mutators.

We use map->freeze_mutex to prevent races between map_freeze() and
memory mapping BPF map contents with writable permissions. The way we
naively do this means we'll hold freeze_mutex for entire duration of all
the mm and VMA manipulations, which is completely unnecessary. This can
potentially also lead to deadlocks, as reported by syzbot in [0].
So, instead, hold freeze_mutex only during writeability checks, bump
(proactively) "write active" count for the map, unlock the mutex and
proceed with mmap logic. And only if something went wrong during mmap
logic, then undo that "write active" counter increment.

For all BPF maps we ensure that VM_MAYWRITE is cleared when
memory-mapping BPF map contents as initially read-only VMA. This is
because in some cases BPF verifier relies on the underlying data to not
be modified afterwards by user space, so once something is mapped
read-only, it shouldn't be re-mmap'ed as read-write.
As such, it's not necessary to check VM_MAYWRITE in bpf_map_mmap() and
map->ops->map_mmap() callbacks: VM_WRITE should be consistently set for
read-write mappings, and if VM_WRITE is not set, there is no way for
user space to upgrade read-only mapping to read-write one.
This patch cleans up this VM_WRITE vs VM_MAYWRITE handling within
bpf_map_mmap(), which is an entry point for any BPF map mmap()-ing
logic. We also drop unnecessary sanitization of VM_MAYWRITE in BPF
ringbuf's map_mmap() callback implementation, as it is already performed
by common code in bpf_map_mmap().
Note, though, that in bpf_map_mmap_{open,close}() callbacks we can't
drop VM_MAYWRITE use, because it's possible (and is outside of
subsystem's control) to have initially read-write memory mapping, which
is subsequently dropped to read-only by user space through mprotect().
In such case, from BPF verifier POV it's read-write data throughout the
lifetime of BPF map, and is counted as "active writer".
But its VMAs will start out as VM_WRITE|VM_MAYWRITE, then mprotect() can
change it to just VM_MAYWRITE (and no VM_WRITE), so when its finally
munmap()'ed and bpf_map_mmap_close() is called, vm_flags will be just
VM_MAYWRITE, but we still need to decrement active writer count with
bpf_map_write_active_dec() as it's still considered to be a read-write
mapping by the rest of BPF subsystem.
Similar reasoning applies to bpf_map_mmap_open(), which is called
whenever mmap(), munmap(), and/or mprotect() forces mm subsystem to
split original VMA into multiple discontiguous VMAs.
Memory-mapping handling is a bit tricky, yes.

It is due to the fact that clocksource_verify_choose_cpus() is invoked with
preemption disabled. This function invokes get_random_u32() to obtain
random numbers for choosing CPUs. The batched_entropy_32 local lock and/or
the base_crng.lock spinlock in driver/char/random.c will be acquired during
the call. In PREEMPT_RT kernel, they are both sleeping locks and so cannot
be acquired in atomic context.
Fix this problem by using migrate_disable() to allow smp_processor_id() to
be reliably used without introducing atomic context. preempt_disable() is
then called after clocksource_verify_choose_cpus() but before the
clocksource measurement is being run to avoid introducing unexpected
latency.

The "Checking clocksource synchronization" message is normally printed
when clocksource_verify_percpu() is called for a given clocksource if
both the CLOCK_SOURCE_UNSTABLE and CLOCK_SOURCE_VERIFY_PERCPU flags
are set.
It is an informational message and so pr_info() is the correct choice.

Tejun reported the following race between fork() and cgroup.kill at [1].
Tejun:
I was looking at cgroup.kill implementation and wondering whether there
could be a race window. So, __cgroup_kill() does the following:
k1. Set CGRP_KILL.
k2. Iterate tasks and deliver SIGKILL.
k3. Clear CGRP_KILL.
The copy_process() does the following:
c1. Copy a bunch of stuff.
c2. Grab siglock.
c3. Check fatal_signal_pending().
c4. Commit to forking.
c5. Release siglock.
c6. Call cgroup_post_fork() which puts the task on the css_set and tests
CGRP_KILL.
The intention seems to be that either a forking task gets SIGKILL and
terminates on c3 or it sees CGRP_KILL on c6 and kills the child. However, I
don't see what guarantees that k3 can't happen before c6. ie. After a
forking task passes c5, k2 can take place and then before the forking task
reaches c6, k3 can happen. Then, nobody would send SIGKILL to the child.
What am I missing?
This is indeed a race. One way to fix this race is by taking
cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem in write mode in __cgroup_kill() as the fork()
side takes cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem in read mode from cgroup_can_fork()
to cgroup_post_fork(). However that would be heavy handed as this adds
one more potential stall scenario for cgroup.kill which is usually
called under extreme situation like memory pressure.
To fix this race, let's maintain a sequence number per cgroup which gets
incremented on __cgroup_kill() call. On the fork() side, the
cgroup_can_fork() will cache the sequence number locally and recheck it
against the cgroup's sequence number at cgroup_post_fork() site. If the
sequence numbers mismatch, it means __cgroup_kill() can been called and
we should send SIGKILL to the newly created task.

The CPU usage time is the time when user, system or both are using the CPU.
Steal time is the time when CPU is waiting to be run by the Hypervisor. It
should not be added to the CPU usage time, hence removing it from the
usage_usec entry.

If a timerlat tracer is started with the osnoise option OSNOISE_WORKLOAD
disabled, but then that option is enabled and timerlat is removed, the
tracepoints that were enabled on timerlat registration do not get
disabled. If the option is disabled again and timelat is started, then it
triggers a warning in the tracepoint code due to registering the
tracepoint again without ever disabling it.
Do not use the same user space defined options to know to disable the
tracepoints when timerlat is removed. Instead, set a global flag when it
is enabled and use that flag to know to disable the events.

Shifting 1 << 31 on a 32-bit int causes signed integer overflow, which
leads to undefined behavior. To prevent this, cast 1 to u32 before
performing the shift, ensuring well-defined behavior.
This change explicitly avoids any potential overflow by ensuring that
the shift occurs on an unsigned 32-bit integer.

When steal time exceeds the measured delta when updating clock_task, we
currently try to catch up the excess in future updates.
However, this results in inaccurate run times for the future things using
clock_task, in some situations, as they end up getting additional steal
time that did not actually happen.
This is because there is a window between reading the elapsed time in
update_rq_clock() and sampling the steal time in update_rq_clock_task().
If the VCPU gets preempted between those two points, any additional
steal time is accounted to the outgoing task even though the calculated
delta did not actually contain any of that "stolen" time.
When this race happens, we can end up with steal time that exceeds the
calculated delta, and the previous code would try to catch up that excess
steal time in future clock updates, which is given to the next,
incoming task, even though it did not actually have any time stolen.
This behavior is particularly bad when steal time can be very long,
which we've seen when trying to extend steal time to contain the duration
that the host was suspended [0]. When this happens, clock_task stays
frozen, during which the running task stays running for the whole
duration, since its run time doesn't increase.
However the race can happen even under normal operation.
Ideally we would read the elapsed cpu time and the steal time atomically,
to prevent this race from happening in the first place, but doing so
is non-trivial.
Since the time between those two points isn't otherwise accounted anywhere,
neither to the outgoing task nor the incoming task (because the "end of
outgoing task" and "start of incoming task" timestamps are the same),
I would argue that the right thing to do is to simply drop any excess steal
time, in order to prevent these issues.

In hibernation_platform_enter(), the code did not check the
return value of syscore_suspend(), potentially leading to a
situation where syscore_resume() would be called even if
syscore_suspend() failed. This could cause unpredictable
behavior or system instability.
Modify the code sequence in question to properly handle errors returned
by syscore_suspend(). If an error occurs in the suspend path, the code
now jumps to label 'Enable_irqs' skipping the syscore_resume() call and
only enabling interrupts after setting the system state to SYSTEM_RUNNING.

In the padata_reorder function, when it loops in 'while', if the alg is
deleted, the refcnt may be decreased to 0 before entering
'padata_find_next', which leads to UAF.
As mentioned in [1], do_serial is supposed to be called with BHs disabled
and always happen under RCU protection, to address this issue, add
synchronize_rcu() in 'padata_free_shell' wait for all _do_serial calls
to finish.

There is no need to adjust the gfp_flags passing to the
bpf_mem_cache_alloc_flags() which only honors the GFP_KERNEL.
The verifier has ensured GFP_KERNEL is passed only in sleepable context.
It has been an old issue since the first introduction of the
bpf_local_storage ~5 years ago, so this patch targets the bpf-next.
bpf_mem_alloc is needed to solve it, so the Fixes tag is set
to the commit when bpf_mem_alloc was first used in the bpf_local_storage.

A redundant frequency update is only truly needed when there is a policy
limits change with a driver that specifies CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS.
In spite of that, drivers specifying CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS receive a
frequency update _all the time_, not just for a policy limits change,
because need_freq_update is never cleared.
Furthermore, ignore_dl_rate_limit()'s usage of need_freq_update also leads
to a redundant frequency update, regardless of whether or not the driver
specifies CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS, when the next chosen frequency is the
same as the current one.
Fix the superfluous updates by only honoring CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS
when there's a policy limits change, and clearing need_freq_update when a
requisite redundant update occurs.
This is neatly achieved by moving up the CPUFREQ_NEED_UPDATE_LIMITS test
and instead setting need_freq_update to false in sugov_update_next_freq().

Commit 1b57d91b96 ("irqchip/gic-v2, v3: Prevent SW resends entirely")
sett the flag which enforces interrupt handling in interrupt context and
prevents software base resends for ARM GIC v2/v3.
But it missed that the helper function which checks the flag was hidden
behind CONFIG_GENERIC_PENDING_IRQ, which is not set by ARM[64].
Make the helper unconditionally available so that the enforcement actually
works.

In /proc/schedstat, lb_hot_gained reports the number hot tasks pulled
during load balance. This value is incremented in can_migrate_task()
if the task is migratable and hot. After incrementing the value,
load balancer can still decide not to migrate this task leading to wrong
accounting. Fix this by incrementing stats when hot tasks are detached.
This issue only exists in detach_tasks() where we can decide to not
migrate hot task even if it is migratable. However, in detach_one_task(),
we migrate it unconditionally.

Currently, space for raw sample data is always allocated within sample
records for both BPF output and tracepoint events. This leads to unused
space in sample records when raw sample data is not requested.
This patch enforces checking sample type of an event in
perf_sample_save_raw_data(). So raw sample data will only be saved if
explicitly requested, reducing overhead when it is not needed.

Consider a scenario where a CPU transitions from CPUHP_ONLINE to halfway
through a CPU hotunplug down to CPUHP_HRTIMERS_PREPARE, and then back to
CPUHP_ONLINE:
Since hrtimers_prepare_cpu() does not run, cpu_base.hres_active remains set
to 1 throughout. However, during a CPU unplug operation, the tick and the
clockevents are shut down at CPUHP_AP_TICK_DYING. On return to the online
state, for instance CFS incorrectly assumes that the hrtick is already
active, and the chance of the clockevent device to transition to oneshot
mode is also lost forever for the CPU, unless it goes back to a lower state
than CPUHP_HRTIMERS_PREPARE once.
This round-trip reveals another issue; cpu_base.online is not set to 1
after the transition, which appears as a WARN_ON_ONCE in enqueue_hrtimer().
Aside of that, the bulk of the per CPU state is not reset either, which
means there are dangling pointers in the worst case.
Address this by adding a corresponding startup() callback, which resets the
stale per CPU state and sets the online flag.

Tell tar to ignore silly-rename files (".__afs*" and ".nfs*") when building
the header archive. These occur when a file that is open is unlinked
locally, but hasn't yet been closed. Such files are visible to the user
via the getdents() syscall and so programs may want to do things with them.
During the kernel build, such files may be made during the processing of
header files and the cleanup may get deferred by fput() which may result in
tar seeing these files when it reads the directory, but they may have
disappeared by the time it tries to open them, causing tar to fail with an
error. Further, we don't want to include them in the tarball if they still
exist.
With CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL=y, something like the following may be seen:
find: './kernel/.tmp_cpio_dir/include/dt-bindings/reset/.__afs2080': No such file or directory
tar: ./include/linux/greybus/.__afs3C95: File removed before we read it
The find warning doesn't seem to cause a problem.
Fix this by telling tar when called from in gen_kheaders.sh to exclude such
files. This only affects afs and nfs; cifs uses the Windows Hidden
attribute to prevent the file from being seen.

The intent of the verifcation done in check_flush_depedency is to ensure
forward progress during memory reclaim, by flagging cases when either a
memory reclaim process, or a memory reclaim work item is flushed from a
context not marked as memory reclaim safe.
This is correct when flushing, but when called from the
cancel(_delayed)_work_sync() paths it is a false positive because work is
either already running, or will not be running at all. Therefore
cancelling it is safe and we can relax the warning criteria by letting the
helper know of the calling context.

These changes are in preparation of BH workqueue which will execute work
items from BH context.
- Update lock and RCU depth checks in process_one_work() so that it
remembers and checks against the starting depths and prints out the depth
changes.
- Factor out lockdep annotations in the flush paths into
touch_{wq|work}_lockdep_map(). The work->lockdep_map touching is moved
from __flush_work() to its callee - start_flush_work(). This brings it
closer to the wq counterpart and will allow testing the associated wq's
flags which will be needed to support BH workqueues. This is not expected
to cause any functional changes.

Currently the workqueue just checks the atomic and locking states after work
execution ends. However, sometimes, a work item may not unlock rcu after
acquiring rcu_read_lock(). And as a result, it would cause rcu stall, but
the rcu stall warning can not dump the work func, because the work has
finished.
In order to quickly discover those works that do not call rcu_read_unlock()
after rcu_read_lock(), add the rcu lock check.
Use rcu_preempt_depth() to check the work's rcu status. Normally, this value
is 0. If this value is bigger than 0, it means the work are still holding
rcu lock. If so, print err info and the work func.

If gcc decides not to inline in_softirq_really(), objtool warns about a
function call with UACCESS enabled:

Mark this as __always_inline to avoid the problem.
